BACKGROUND ON SDSN & SDG ACADEMY

In 2012, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) was launched under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. It started with ten thematic working groups on a range of environmental, social, and economic topics, which contributed to the debate and ultimately the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDSN quickly grew and founded its global networks program; a membership-based alliance of top-tier knowledge-generating institutions. As of 2022, SDSN has members in 50 networks across 144 countries.

In 2016, the SDSN expanded its mission with the creation of the SDG Academy - the premier source of high-quality resources and guidance on education for the SDGs, with the mandate to enrich the field of sustainable development and achieve Agenda 2030. The SDG Academy creates and curates relevant content on the SDGs, shares innovative pedagogies and training models, and nurtures a global community of learners to prepare this generation and the next to achieve sustainable development.

The SDG Academy has long been invested in online education as a means to provide largescale access to quality learning opportunities. Digital innovation is a key effort to evolving our education systems so that they are resilient, inclusive, and capable of meeting the challenges faced by people and the planet.

In order to address the spectrum of learners from K-12 to lifelong learning, we must strengthen the global educational ecosystem to include enhanced support for high quality resources, instruction, and collaborative spaces. Within this context, the SDG Academy endeavors to expand its current efforts and launch new strategic activities to offer avenues for professional development and work closely with the private sector on their upskilling needs.

The correct information and education can change people's values and behaviors, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. The increasing emphasis on upskilling and professional development have pushed business leaders to realize that the skills their organizations and employees will need in the future are not the same ones they've required in the past. In fact, 46% of learning and development professionals say that upskilling and reskilling is a top focus area this year, according to LinkedIn’s 2022 Workplace Learning Report.
